Welcome to The Land of Nod

This newsletter is an expression of my commitment to creativity, wonder, and reciprocity. An archive of my perplexities and prayers. As a subscriber, you can expect to read a series of essays — I’ll be writing and sharing at least one every month — on themes that have shaped me. In an age when life feels increasingly dislocated from the world, I grant that creating or subscribing to yet another newsletter is not really what we need. But I hope, nonetheless, that somehow my turns of phrase help return the soul to its socket.

Art | The art used for this newsletter — cropped for the logo and cover image — was created by Sylvan Hamburger. The artwork itself is a relief jigsaw print titled ball toss, which Sylvan made in 2019. Like so much of his work, I love ball toss for its odd and playful sense of balance. Sylvan is a dear friend, a talented printmaker, and a generous collaborator. Here is a link to his website: http://sylvanhamburger.com.

Land | I am writing this newsletter on the traditional and unceded territories of the Lək̓ʷəŋən-speaking people. My writing is, among other things, an attempt to walk on these lands with courtesy and reverence. While this newsletter may be read around the world, it is important to know that it comes from a very specific place, a place I love. And I invite you, as you read my words, to consider where you are reading from.
